February 14, 2006 Earn your karmic brownie points
Update Again: Annika's Internet Insurance Policy has been expanded and fancified, and offers for various donations have been coming in. In a few days we should have Moreena's COTA link, and then I will post again to really get the ball rolling. It's amazing how people are responding to this--even the ones who haven't yet been able to make any donations or plans. I've had at least 50 more visits today than I normally get on a Sunday, and they are all coming from Moreena's. UPDATED: The quickest, plainest web page is up and running at if you want to participate and/or keep informed. Just about everyone who reads this also reads Phantom Scribbler, I know, and most of you read falling down is also a gift too. So this isn't for you. It's for the other ten of you or so, who don't. The author of falling down is also a gift has two young daughters. The eldest, who is five, was born with a congenital liver disease and has had two transplants so far. Her health has been poor since November, and she has been in the hospital more than out, having complicated surgeries and procedures to try to track down the source of her internal bleeding. Recently, they believe they found it, only it is a portion of her anatomy that they cannot operate on. The only solution at this point, that they know of, is to have a third transplant; but after several months of hospital stays she is not strong enough to have one. She needs about six months of relatively good health before they could attempt it. Unfortunately, they ran out of insurance coverage. For the year. As of Monday. This year's one million dollars is gone. If that insurance company doesn't come to its senses in mighty short order, and there are a few avenues the family has yet to try, a few of us are banding together to host the Internet Fundraiser to End All Internet Fundraisers. Because on top of everything else they're going through, for the love of fucking god, they shouldn't have to worry about how to come up with a million dollars. One of the ideas being tossed around is auctioning or raffleing off goods, homemade or otherwise. Other ideas gratefully accepted. If you would like to help, please spend some time thinking of how you might be able to contribute. The family is starting up a COTA account for donations, so that everyone can be assured that they're legit and that money in excess of Annika's needs will go to help another child in the same situation. I've offered to donate web space for a site to coordinate fundraising efforts; in which case, a simple and elegant website design would be helpful. But anything anyone can think of would be a welcome contribution to the conversation, which is also happening over at Phantom's. You'll notice I've post-dated this entry; it's staying on top for a few days, since this is Friday afternoon and many of you won't see it until Monday. I can certainly do a donation through the virtual casserole campaign. Thank you for doing all this. Posted by: Genevieve at February 11, 2006 11:52 AM
I've said it elsewhere, but again And I should note, too, that although my fear at first was that we were going to have to come up with huge amounts of money (like a half-mill or so) to continue treating Annika, it now looks like we will only have to come up with around 3,000 each month. Still more money than is floating around on a professor's salary at a small midwestern college, but at least less overwhelming. Just so the task doesn't appear so much like a lost cause, I mean. But thank you thank you thank you. Posted by: moreena at February 11, 2006 1:21 PM
I blogged this and will add a COTA button to T.O. Mama when it's available. Jen Posted by: Jen at February 11, 2006 9:29 PM
Thanks for all you are doing, Andrea. I will put the COTA button and link to the other page you made on my blog soon. We all want to help in whatever way we can. Also, I really enjoyed reading your entries today. You are a great writer and I love to read your point of view. Hope it is ok to blogroll you... Posted by: angela marie at February 12, 2006 1:34 PM
Thanks, Angela Marie--and yes, absolutely! Posted by: Andrea at February 12, 2006 1:59 PM
Yes, I read you and Moreena, and I admire how much you are helping her. She is a wonderful woman, and you are a fantastic friend! Posted by: Running2Ks at February 12, 2006 2:04 PM
Good to know, Andrea! When I get paid next, and I'm no longer overdrawn, I will make a (small, unfortunately) donation. Hope others do too! Posted by: Abbey at February 13, 2006 12:26 AM
